Active Citizenship Toolkit – how you can be involved. July 18th edition #activecitizenship #Manchester

The Active Citizenship Toolkit is beginning to take shape. For anyone who doesn’t already know – the ACT aims to be a way for individuals and groups who are working for progressive social change (climate justice, social justice) to think more strategically about what skills, knowledge and relationships they need to achieve their aims, and who might be able to help them plug any gaps they have.  We hope it will help groups who might otherwise fall apart because of blind spots and bottlenecks to not just persist, but even to thrive.

Various individuals have volunteered to help write, proofread and categorise (more details below). Encouragingly, at least three groups have said that they are up for being “crash test dummies” on the toolkit.

We have pencilled in mid-late September for the launch of a website to go with the toolkit.  Every Saturday from now till then we will give a progress report, mostly made up of adverts for bite-sized (or more of a meal) tasks that you can get involved in.  (Saying “yes” to one task will not lead to us badgering or wheedling you to take on further tasks, btw).

The overall schedule until the end of the year looks like this (yes, we do love a good Gantt chart…)

As of 18th July –

Elements for which both element descriptors and level descriptors have been written: 119

Elements for which level descriptors remain to be written: 45

As well as polishing off those level descriptors (i.e. what a novice, practitioner, expert or ninja could be expected to be able to do) we want to do the following by the middle of August:

  • proofread and tighten up the elements (some may need combining, some splitting, some even dropping altogether).
  • categorise these elements in ways that “make sense” so that folks can search for them easily, and think about how they fit together.
  • figure out what the “key” elements are for further work ahead of a (pencilled-in) launch of the website. These key elements will be a combination of – well, here’s the Venn Diagram…

Longer term (as in, from August onwards) we will be asking folks to

  • write element introduction essays for key elements
  • find or create “development resources” for key elements
  • devise “assessment resources” for key elements
  • help us build the website
  • help us come up with materials for publicising the Toolkit in general.

If you’ve any questions, or are interested in getting involved, please email marc@climateemergencymanchester.net  Meanwhile, here are the adverts you’ll see over the coming days/weeks on Twitter and (once improved) Instagram…
