Do you want to be an Organic Farmer?

Date:
Fri, 08/21/2020

Being an organic grower is an incredibly fulfilling job, nourishing people and planet. But it’s also fraught with risk, underpaid, and incredibly hard work! Is it for you?

Join us on Wednesday 23rd September 4.00 pm at Woodbank Community Food Hub, Stockport.

Interested in organic food production but not sure if it’s for you? Come and find out more and meet growers and trainees in this honest and pragmatic talk and Q&A Session (booking is necessary).

The Kindling Trust will be hosting its annual session, alongside local growers, to give you a flavour of what being an organic grower involves. It’s in preparation for the upcoming application window for our 2021 FarmStart programme, which provides a supported route into commercial organic vegetable growing in Greater Manchester.

This year we will be joined by one of our FarmStart trainees (who can tell you how the programme really is) as well as a local grower who will talk about their personal experiences of commercial organic production with all its challenges and benefits.

Kindling’s Helen Dodd will be introducing our 2021 FarmStart programme and what we have planned for our next season of growing and training at our Woodbank Community Food Hub..

Michelle, who joined FarmStart in the Spring of 2020 reflects on a year in which local food production was more important than ever:

“These past couple of months at FarmStart have been a mixture of emotions. It’s been both challenging and thoroughly enjoyable. All the hard work we did at the beginning of the year is finally coming to fruition and we are seeing lots of lush and healthy growth, plus these past few weeks has seen us doing our first bit of harvesting. All the beds have been prepared and almost all are filled; those which aren’t soon will be. It’s been amazing to see damp wet beds now filled with healthy plants which are thriving and beginning to produce lots of lovely vegetables”.

“The most satisfying part of these past couple of months is working with such a great and hard-working team. We have really pulled together to get everything done and it’s great to see the progress that has been made at the Woodbank site. As everything becomes more organised it certainly makes the work easier and more enjoyable. Also, seeing the quality of the vegetables we are producing has been incredible. Growing Organically and with no animal inputs has produced such healthy and vibrant crops that anyone would be proud to put their name to.”

If you are interested in joining our FarmStart programme in 2021 then please do come along to this session. To book your place please email Helen at FarmStart@kindling.org.uk.
