ZERO scrutiny of #climate emergency at upcoming Neighbourhoods and “Environment” Committee. Again.

On Wednesday, the scrutiny committee that is supposed to be keeping tabs on what is – and is not – happening on climate action in Manchester meets for its monthly meeting.

You can see the agenda here.

You know this by now. We reported the same last month. There is NO item on climate change.

In July, the following inconvenient fact was released (in the middle of a glossy gaslighting report by the Manchester Climate Change “Agency”, a totally dependent on the council (400k at last count) figleaf. I am going to shout this fact.

MANCHESTER AS A CITY BURNED ONE QUARTER OF ITS ENTIRE CARBON BUDGET FOR THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY IN THE LAST TWO YEARS ALONE.

They buried this in the middle of their report, rather than tell the truth, or demonstrate leadership.

If a carbon budget was more than a PR stunt to be discarded once inconvenient…

If we had a functioning democracy in Manchester,

Then this would be the top item on pretty much every agenda of every meeting.  There would have been many speeches, workshops, videos, consultations. Yes, even in the middle of a pandemic, in the middle of budget crisis.

If.

Next week our petition for a seventh scrutiny committee closes.  The city council can decide to listen to what over 1500 people have signed.  Or they can continue to divert, to dissemble and to ignore the fierce urgency of the climate emergency (the one they all voted to declare in July 2019).

We as citizens also have to decide. What are we going to do? How are we going to support each other to scrutinise, to propose, to co-ordinate.

Btw, tomorrow, the latest “Hung Drawn and Quarterly” report will be released.
